The Wind Today

The wind today made me remember the quietest place.

Last bay of Grandpa’s barn.
Smell of oil and burlap.
Squeeze between the tractors
Past where the cat always made her bed.
In the dark back corner, brush the ropes of baler twine aside to find the latch.
Climb up through the secret door set high in the wall.

There, a magic space back behind the hay stacks.
Warm. Sheltered.
Even with the wind gusting outside.

A book and a couple frozen chocolate chip cookies snuck from Gram’s freezer in the back room on my way past.

Not silence.
Quiet.
